Chief Mine Engineer, Mali

Introduction

The Fekola Gold Project produces in excess of 500,000 ounces of gold per annum from total annual open pit production of circa 95 million tonnes.

The existing operation is predominantly focused on a single large open pit, however mining operations have recently expanded to include multiple smaller satellite deposits.  Continued exploration success means the number, size and schedule of open pit satellite deposits is very dynamic and evolving. 

The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for all mine planning and mine engineering technical support of the Mining operations.

Location and Reporting Structure

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, this position will be a fly in – fly out rotation, based at the Fekola Gold Project in Mali.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all mine engineering activities are conducted in a safe and effective manner by appropriately trained personnel;
  • Develop strategic mine plans for quarterly forecasts, annual mine budgets and Life of Mine (LOM) plans;
  • Ensure forecasts, budgets and LOM plans are achievable, reflect mine performance and clearly identify assumptions, input data sources and resourcing requirements;
  • Ensure implementation of effective short term (daily, weekly) mine planning to support the Mining Operations to achieve production in line with quarterly and annual targets;
  • Provide technical support to drill & blast activities (drill pattern design, explosive loading, explosive timing, analysis of drill & blast performance, optimisation of drill & blast performance);
  • Complete pit, waste dump, ore stockpile and haulage route designs;
  • Ensure Mine planning and design incorporate requirements and activities of other Mine Technical service groups (Grade Control, Mine Survey, Geotechnical, etc.);
  • Develop and implement accurate periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) production reports;
  • Monitor operational compliance to mine plan and mine design.  Ensure deviations from plan / design are identified, impact of deviation assessed and develop rectification strategies as required;
  • Complete analysis of mining performance (production metrics, cost, equipment utilisation, etc.) and identify areas of improvement.  Compare actual performance versus modelling used to construct quarterly / annual / LOM schedules and budgets;
  • Manage Mine Engineering resources (personnel, equipment, budgets, etc.);
  • Direct training and personal development of national Mine Engineers;
  • Complete projects as required by the Technical Services Manager or Mining Manager; and
  • Other duties as set out by the Company.

Competencies and Requirements

  • BSc Degree in Mine Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Large open cut hard rock mine experience essential, preferably in a multi pit operating environment.
  • 10+ years of production planning and mine engineering experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Expat experience would be viewed positively.
  • Significant experience within drill & blast activities, load & haul activities, production supervision, fleet management systems, production planning, mine design, cost modelling and database management.
  • Good understanding of mining equipment capabilities and mine production time usage models.
  • Proficient user of mining related software (familiarity with MineSight, Deswik and Alastri Tactical Scheduler viewed positively) and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to analyse the effectiveness of systems and processes and to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate across language and cultural differences.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop less experienced personnel.
  • Possess a positive attitude and work well in a team environment on a remote site.
  • Code B driver’s license.
